Why did Quest buy Tora?
Mark Rittman writes that Quest will buy Tora. I wonder why Quest would buy Tora considering that they already own Toad. I like Tora, but i consider Toad to be a better tool. Maybe Quest just wants to protect Toad by buying Tora and even further slowing Tora’s development?

Hi Andrej,
Maybe it’s because TOra runs on Linux as well as windows and it gives them a presence in the Linux market? Of course TOra on Linux is GPL, so maybe what they’d do is freeze the current version and keep that free, making all future versions ‘pay versions’.
Given that TOra is pretty much a TOAD clone, I wouldn’t expect TOra and TOAD to continue on Windows as separate products; they’re probably buying the developer’s experience, with the aim of (a) stopping a potential competitor product, and (b) making TOAD a better product in future. All speculation mind.

AFAIK Tora has also some (limited) support for postgres. Maybe Quest wants to expand the supported database list ? TOAD on Linux would be really neat, but have my doubts …

Quest is also porting TOAD to SQL Server. Other than that, they are following the normal path to global domination by absorbing any product alternatives. It’s the same reason they bought TOAD in the first place. SQL Navigator cost 5 times the price of TOAD and it sucked. Now the price gap has closed on the two but at least both are still supported.

Either Quest is going to slowly kill Tora to make sure it doesn’t steal any marketshare from Toad, or they are taking Tora as a starting point to make a linux version of Toad. Hopefully the latter.
