Xhtml part 2

As i wrote a couple of days ago, i’ve been working on converting a website with a lot of tables for layout to an tableless website using xhtml and css. The result is ok in mozilla but not very good in ie6.

The problems in ie are mostly caused by two bug, which are well documenten on the internet:

  1. margins for floating divs are doubled if you don’t specify display:inline,
  2. extra margin is added to the bottom of list items.

The page now looks ok in both mozilla and ie, althought the pictures in the top don’t change in ie when you hover over the menu. I’ll probably have to use some javascript or ie behaviours to fix this.

Some usefull ie workarounds are listed on mezzoblue and on Explorer exposed!.

As a note, it looks pretty good on Apple’s OS X Safari – which uses the Konquerer rendering engine. Further, when you highlight the menu’s on the left, the image does change properly.

On a second note, didn’t know if you were aware that Oracle runs great on OS X. I’m using it right now for development work. OS X, as a bsd system, has great support for XHTML, Oracle, and all kinds of web development technologies.

Thanks for testing. I have kde and konqueror running on a different machine, but i hadn’t tested it yet. Hopefully the real konqueror is as good as Apple’s version.

I am aware that oracle runs on apple, but i think apple’s laptops are just too expensive. I’m now using an acer travelmate 800, runs quite long on a battery due to the pentium m, it has a great screen (1400×1040), wireless, bluetooth, all for EUR1550. (plus EUR350 for an extra 1GB). A similar powerbook (15inch, 1Gb, wireless) would cost EUR3000. Acer’s build quality could be a bit better though…
