Now using wordpress
I ‘m now using wordpress to run this weblog. Part of this is due to the fact that the Licence of MovableType has changed, but i didn’t really investigate if i need to pay for it. I do think MovableType is a nice piece of software, and it’s really worth some money, but why pay when you can get something equal for less? I need my money for other things (I really need a new 12 meter kite)...
But the real reason i’m swithing is because i think that the Movabletype team is too busy doing commercially interesting things that the weblog software isn’t really improving. I’d expected hierarchical categories and better photo upload support a long time ago, but nothing seems to be happening. Hopefully WordPress will keep moving forward.
Because of the swith you may experience broken links, i’ll fix those in time.

Andrej,
Looks very nice. Does wordpress have an import routine to bring in your Moveable Type postings?
From what I’ve seen, the new MT3.0 licensing rules only affects sites with >1 author or >3 weblogs, so only would affect sites like orablogs and orafaq.
Does wordpress have the photo upload facility that you were looking for?
regards
Mark

Yes, importing mt entries is really easy. You can export your entries from MT and then import them into WordPress. The only issue i have is that the MT archive urls use underscores whereas the WP archive urls use dashes. I’ve created a rewrite rule for the most read stories on my blog.
I agree about the site numbers, and those shouldn’t really cause any problems, but the non-commercial license states the following:
“Non-Commercial Purposes” means use of the Software by an individual for publishing on a personal blog site on a single sever that does not directly or indirectly support any commercial efforts.
I’m not selling stuff on this blog, but i do talk about work, so i guess i’m indirectly supporting commercial efforts.
The photo upload isn’t there yet, you can upload one file at a time, as you can with mt. But i do have better hopes for WordPress. It’s an itch which needs to be scratched, and the wp team isn’t distracted by commercial interests.

Mark, I had no problems importing my 500+ entries with comments from MT. It went better than I could have hoped. Don’t be fooled by the “free” version of MT 3.0. You don’t get support; none, zip, nada. This includes suport from the MT forums as you need a paid-for version to get a key that allows you in to the forums. In my mind, THAT is not free.
As far as photos, I’m using the same thing Matt (of the WP team) uses; Gallery. It was easy to set up. I’m still tinkering with it but I believe it will be what I want.
