The future of Oracle Forms
Lucas Jellema has posted an interesting item on the Amis blog: Eating your own dogfood – use of Oracle Development tools within the Oracle Applications development group. It describes how Oracle is using it’s own tools to implement the Oracle Applications business suite. Some interesting statements are made in this article:
- Oracle doesn’t use Designer to generate Forms.
- Developers are now as productive developing Java (bc4j/uix) applications as they are developing Forms applications.
- All existing Forms modules are going to be converted to Java.

In most cases, including Oracle, less proprietary is better. At this “tools level” Java brings an entire gamma of opportunities.

Andrej,
Your summary is of course correct. However, a couple of subtleties should not go unlisted:
The Apps developers achieve this productity using frameworks and libraries with reusable components not (yet) available to the rest of us. Besides, they may be working on releases of the tools such as JDeveloper that are also not yet available outside of Oracle.
The fact that they do not generate Forms from Designer was not new to me. The fact that Designer is (still) their tool for Database Design and Generation (with no plans of migrating that activity to another tool) was more of a surprise.
The migration/conversion from Forms to Java/J2EE was again a major surprise; however it is good to note – in my estimate – it will only start in about two years time and will not be complete before 2010-11.

...less proprietary is better…
You’re paying for it! Then why not also use what you’re paying for?

We have tried the oracle migration strategy and tools but it has been unsuccessfull because poor performance.
Do you know any tool that can help us?

NEOS provides a service that utilizes their Vgo software to assist in migrating Forms applications to Java. The approach NEOS takes is that a client server application cannot be simply automatically converted to a web application. Instead, some time is taken to understand how the application could be changed to better suit the web.

In response to and as backup to Swampcat, I market for a European reseller for CipherSoft (therefore I admit to bias!), and came across this conversation. May I add that the Exodus tool has now been around long enough to be able to do what it says it does? the website will give you the basics but if you want a sample form converted please email me james.cole@cipherservices.co.uk to tell me what you are trying to achieve and I will (do my best to) arrange a sample conversion.

I work at Imex Systems, I came across this conversation…...and wanted to add here that Forms Migration is what we do at Imex for a living.
Imex Systems has an Oracle validated tool (automated), a proven technology and plenty of good client references for Forms migration from C/s or Character to the web.
Check out www.imexsystems.com
The migration process will be painless days/weeks….not months. Guaranteed.
Thanks, Rohit Bhalla
