Oreilly has an interesting read: Run Mac OS X on a PC. Apparently it’s even usable on a 3Ghz processor.

You can run osx ( 10.4.1 (developers edition ) or 10.4.3 (for intel ))on a pc, natively….even on a dual core AMD x2…no problem. I have screen shots….you need a separate drive for each os…one forwindows, one for osx….here’s how to do it…I can’t take credit for figuring this out…..some other very smart soul…but I….and one of my friends….has tried it….it works, and works very well…...

UNEASYsilence visitors are highly intelligent readers, that is why I had NO hesitation posting the OSX Intel challenge.

Justin Nolan of 360hacker.net, who managed to crack the code in less then twelve hours, is proudly our winner.

UPDATE 8-13: Now you can Dual Boot Windows/Mac OS X.
UPDATE 8-14: Howto: Build a Mac OS X x86 machine to run OS X natively.
UPDATE 8-15: Howto: Install OSX Tiger on Intel Machines (USB Drives) Using Only Windows Software

    The instructions per Justin:

    How do you do it?

First of all, you can’t install OS X on a new partition, it needs it’s own drive. For this guide Im installing it on my Sony Vaio TR2A. Since I only have one harddrive, it means I’m wiping windows and all my files in the process. You can easily follow the same steps but instead install it on a second harddrive in your PC. Here is how I have succesfully install OS X x86 NATIVELY on my laptop!

First of all, I think your CPU needs at LEAST sse2. For rosetta and to get itunes and other ppc apps working, you need sse3. My vaio has a Pentuim M, so no rosetta for me. Everything else works. Im posting this from the OS X x86 port of Firefox Wink

    1. Download “VMWare files for patched Mac OS X Tiger Intel” from your favorite torrent site. (Hint: Use the search function).

    2. Copy tiger-x86-flat.img from the archive to an external USB drive (it’s 6gb)

    3. Download Ubuntu Live CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/) … be sure you get the “Live CD”!!

    4. Burn the ubuntu iso, stick it in your pc, and boot it! (make sure you have your bios set to boot to CD)

    5. Once ubuntu boots and the gui finally comes up, hook up the USB drive you copied the 6gb image to. A window should pop up showing the contents of the drive. Take note of where its mounted. It should be /Devices/Yourdrivesvolumename

    6. Open a terminal window and cd to that directory (/Devices/Yourdrivesvolumename). Do an “ls” to make sure you are in the right place (you should see the 6gb img file.

    7. In the terminal window type:

    dd bs=1048576 if=./tiger-x86-flat.img of=/dev/hda

Replace hda with the correct drive! If you only have one drive, its probably hda. Thats what mine was. You are about to erase this entire drive so make sure youve got it right and make sure you want to do this! Hit enter. It takes a while… took my vaio about 9 minutes.

    8. When it’s done, remove the ubuntu disc and shut down the pc. Disconnect your usb drive. Thats it! When you power it back on, OS X should boot!

For whatever reason, mine hangs when its loading. If this happens to you, boot with the -x option (hit a button at the darwin screen when you boot your pc. enter ”-x” and hit enter). Should work without any problems, and I dont see any restrictions being in safe mode.

You’ll notice there is a login screen, and you dont know the password! This image was created by “deadmoo” and we can easily change his password. Reboot the machine again. Again, hit a button at the darwin screen. This time type ”-v” and hit enter. At the command prompt screen type:

    sh /bin/sh
    passwd curtis
(change the password to what you like)

    passwd deadmoo
(change the passwrod to what you like)

Done! Now reboot once more, and again use the ”-x” option. Everything should boot, and at the login screen enter your new password.

WELCOME TO THE OS X x86 CLUB! Look ma, no vmware!

Note: If you are installing this in a PC and have multiple drives, you dont need to use an external drive or linux distro. Simply dd the image in the same manner to any physical drive in your pc, and when its done boot to that drive and it should work. For windows users, there is a port of dd for windows you can use here.

I messed around with this in vmware before installing natively, and I can tell you running it native is a million times faster! Its full speed. USB works, ethernet works, all the x86 software works. Enjoy!

  2. Tim Says:

How do you get past the darwin loading screen? The two computers I have tried this on have not be able to load osx when i do the -x option or any other option for that matter. Am I missing a step?

  3. Daiminhchu Says:

It’s a wonderful work. But anyone knows how to make OSX run on CD/DVD (like some linux) ? Because I don’t want to ruin my current system !

  8. Ben Oz Says:

I need step-by-step instruction on how to install OSX on a Spectrum Z80. I’d like to be able to install from a games cartridge. Could I make a dual boot and still be able to run Frogger?

  9. andrejk Says:

Frogger will be a problem, but you’ll be able to run attack of the mutant camels, is that ok?

  10. GreenDave Says:

Sorry, but games cartridge for the spectrum will be a problem. You can do it using tape and the audio input. Just buy yourself a box of 200 c90s and play the OSX disc on you CD player and record the audio output. Then play back into your Spectrum – seems to work on my ZX but not sure about he Z80. Hopefully enough step-by-step detail for Compaq Presario v2570 user.

  11. mark Says:

i have it running natively on an amiga 500 , installed using 1000 x floppy disks and it works flawlessly but no bluetooth. ah well. Im trying to get OSX on my pocket calculatior, its called the Xcal project, so far i have the boot screen but it crashed as it started running as i don’t think my 8 digit lcd is capable of displaying the right shades of green. obviously there is no sound when using a calculator for OSX but it sure beats just being able to add and multiply. Should have it on my mobile phone too, again wime will tell if this is stable but im hopeful.

  12. mark Says:

oh yes and if u turn the calculator upside down and type in 55378008 it still reads BOOBLESS . How goods that.

i really need to run the mac stuff, i can’t afford virus protection and its expensive for computer repairs…if i knew what a mac was before i bought this pc i would’v bought one. but now its just wasted money. now i want to run one on my pc to see if it will have more protection, no blue screens, and no crashes.

  25. Billy G. Says:

    hi,

can you please email me the latest release of OS X? i cant find anyone who will email the program to me. will i be able to put it onto a floppy disk (4.4Mb) and install it on my new macbook pro? I managed to mess up my system on it and need to re-install. after i get that working i was wondering if you could tell me how i can put the bits from inside my G3 desktop into my 286 PC to make it into a dual processor giant? that way i can run MS Office and also have the virus protection of a mac since both processors will run side by side. i also have a memory card from my Play Station 1, can i put this into the same machine? if i can does this mean i can then play playstation 1 games on the new machine? also, where would i plug in the controller? could i just put it into the same plug as the keyboard?

    Sincerely.
    Billy G.

I googled “torrent” but getting my hands on OSX just isn’t happening; I’m assuming the servers are probably stuck in a freeloading cycle, but I am hopeful.

    ***Update:
I know its the same post but hey, updates happen! Got OSX (pronounced ossix?) from my mom (apparently she has a mac, right upstairs) and I succesfully downloaded to my HDD (via the retractable cupholder). Can’t find the start bar or the rt. mouse button but oh well. Lovin the OS, Lovin it – I feel like such an artist/pirate…an arrrrrggghhh-tist!

  32. David Here Says:

I just had similar trouble as Ben stated earlier.
I originally planned to dual boot win/osx on my rectum using this hack but had to go a different route.
I have a dual poopcessor so I knew #crunching was a non-issue but I had to know I could still play turdblaster5000 and DiaperRash online.
I put the disk into my slot-loading bum drive, crossed my fingers, and waited to hear the familiar windows chime.
Unfortunatley I was met with the GRUB bootyloader screen and i had to actually choose an OS. WTF?
I thought the computer would choose for me.
Oh well, guess apple still has a few bugs to work out.
Oh, and Ben – it is pronounced ossix, that is very intuitive of you (few people actually figure that out, I bet your a “magic eye” fan).

  35. tarek Says:

hey guys i have a problem, when i go to the directory in the ubuntu terminal and type the dd bs…..... it says permission denied. 1. how do i fix this? 2. where do i find what the drive i want is (hda, sda?)

  36. Paul Says:

you need to run it under root by typing su then enter, ubuntu disables the root account by default. (or at least su). to enable type sudo passwd root (basically add a root password).

after you have done this type su then enter, then enter the password u chose and u can run the dd…..

Mind you i have not been able to get it to boot yet, how should the drive be formatted before the dd step (or is it irrelvent?)

  37. me Says:

  41. boobless Says:

re: “wow, i’ve never seen a conversation turn to crap so fast.. very funny guys!”
    ____

All those incoherent “crap” posts you are referring to actually WERE posted by Steve Jobs. Nothing drives him crazy so much as the idea of MacOS running on PC’s, so he tries to make the idea sound ludicrous. Consider this Apple’s version of Microsoft “FUD.” You have to understand why this idea is so scary to Apple executives:

“Back in the late 90’s, Apple did an experiment. They decided to stop monopolizing their own corner of the market, and allowed a few companies to make Mac-compatible PC’s. This move positioned Apple as a software company for a short while, by taking control of the computers out of their hands. This did not last, and Apple once again deemed that their computers were the only ones that were allowed to run the Mac OS. Why is this? Because they did not make money off their cheap operating system. They make money off their ridiculously expensive computers. Do you actually believe that they’re going to allow their operating system to run on a PC that any hobbyist can throw together with $500 worth of parts from NewEgg? No, they want you to buy their MacBook Pro for $2000…or their Mac Pro for $2500 (over $17,000 fully loaded!). Their $100 operating system is petty cash… Apple is a hardware company. They will do anything they possibly can to keep their operating system from running on anything but their hardware… They could care less about their OS. The MacOS is merely a trojan horse to get their hardware into your house or office.”

  42. PwndApple2 Says:

I just finished installing MAc OSX 10.4.8 JaS onto my AMD system. I did a boot from CD (BIOS option) and made sure i had an extra drive for JUST INSTALLING OSX! Now, i say that because you can crap out a drive real fast and have to spend a lot of time adding little 0’s to it.. not fun. Anyways…
    setup:
    AMD64 xxxxx+ dual core.
    ATI 1650 Pro
    motherboard .. lawl…
80gig WD 8mb cache drive (old school eh?)

... boot from CD and installed to the 80gig with 0 issues .. yes, 0! the main issue people get is the b0 error, its not an error tho. You need to make the drive partition active as follows:

F8 for Darwin when it asks
    -v -s
    fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 (yes ZERO)
print (to show the partition #’s)
Flag n (n=partition # ... mine was “flag 1” to flag partition 1 as the active)

after that, MACOSX … it isnt hard, my CPU is infact an SSE SSE2 and SSE3 CPU .. i had no issues, sound works, network works, ATI (AGP card) works 100% ... no issues.

    oh, last note …
PLEASE SELLECT ONLY THINGS YOU NEED DURRING INSTALLATION !
i did Titan ATI AGP fix thing and JaS ATI AGP fix thing, thus installing 2x “fixes” and messing up my video .. yeah yeah, it happens. So make sure your only installing things u need. AMD, select JaS AMD patch .. ATI? only select one ATI fixer ….

    EASY AS PAH !

Bittorrent & beige box? Cost me £180! That’d be sweet!

The £2500 G5s at the studio are the best computers: the hardware box is wicked. You can open it up and swap a hard drive or memory in a few minutes, and no tangled cables. They’ve been abused hard, fans going at full pelt for days. And they just took the abuse without budging. The Xserve is virtually indestructible, gets Hundreds of gigs of reads and writes a day, and again, just takes it.

You only get that from the OS and the hardware being developed together. You pay for both.

I made a powerbook 100 sandwich. You just need big bread, and some heat conducting paste. The powerbook 100 only needs thin bread, and will not toast it. It will stay cool indefinitely. It will happily run System 7.5.

  46. Capthook Says:

I got OSX86-HOTISO from the net to work a long time ago – those of you looking for OSX just do a google for OSX86 torrent and you should find it. My biggest problem was getting OSX86 to (use) all of your PC hardware properly – and it can be a real head ache. Often you have to modify drivers, or hack around to get your devices to function.

For instance, I got a Belkin Wifi card to work as an Apple Airport Extreme (the hackintosh thinks this is apple hardware because the Belkin wifi card shared it’s processor with the airport.) and now I have built in WiFi. Kewl? Yes—but a headache—also yes!

I went through a few quite other wifi cards / usb devices I couldn’t get to work, including attempting to find a certain version of a USB wifi device.

Then there is video—flashing a PC card to become Mac is one solution (the easiest) ; to get QE (quartz extreme) enabled. However most of us are still running that PC AGP card or PCI-E card without Apple drivers / or a Mac ROM because we still want to use the video card in Windows. I’ve seen the progress with X800 / x1600 series ATI cards which run easily with osx86 now: http://www.installers.dl.am/ —but I don’t have one of these cards.

So what I am trying to say, is that in building one of these – you end up buying a bunch of specific hardware to make it work ; don’t be surprised!

  47. Capthook Says:

While yes ; Apple hardware is overpriced (can’t argue with the truth!)—I really don’t look at OSX like it’s the ‘Trojan’ that made me get into all this Apple hardware. It’s a far better / more stable OS than Windows anyway.

... plus I can break your WEP / WPA encryption in about 2 mins with KisMAC , running ‘Kismet’ on top of OSX instead of having to run Unix as a seperate OS ; then fire up that ugly old command line version of Kismet… blah.
