CentOS: a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Just found out about Centos. Centos is a new Linux distribution which aims to be a 100% binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This is very good news as Oracle only tests it’s products on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server. Theoritically you should be able to use another distribution, but i’ve found out that this is not the easiest way. I’ve experienced stability problems on Fedora, and installation problems on another distribution.

How would this be different than http://www.whiteboxlinux.org/? We’ve been replacing some RHEL installs with this white box distro, and been very pleased with it. Another one you might enjoy is http://taolinux.org/ which has a similar mission.

I haven’t looked at whitebox linux and toalinux, so i can’t comment on how they’re different. I read some statements which said that more effort is being put into centos, resulting in a more up to date distribution. Not sure if that’s really a fact or not.

Whitebox is done by only one developer. Whereas CentOs is community based. I heard recently Whitebox’s sole developer joined CentOS team!
